SDRF retrieves lifeless man from abandoned coal mine

By IH News Desk Jun 02, 2026 127

KHLIEHRIAT: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) retrieved the body of a 41-year-old man from an abandoned coal mine in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills District, following a six-day operation that began after the individual accidentally fell into the mine on May 26. The mine, approximately 120 feet deep and filled with around 40 feet of water, presented significant challenges for recovery efforts.

Activated by the District Administration on May 27, SDRF personnel faced immediate difficulties, as unsafe conditions and diminishing daylight prevented rescue operations from commencing the first day. Local residents and family members of the victim contributed by assisting in the setup of pumping equipment to lower the water level, thereby aiding the search operation.

By June 1, 2026, after extensive coordination between SDRF personnel, local authorities, and community members, the operation advanced significantly. At approximately 6:30 pm, four SDRF personnel, along with two local volunteers, entered the mine to conduct a thorough search. By 9 pm, they successfully located the body, which was subsequently handed over to police authorities for necessary procedures.

A readout issued Tuesday said that the operation showcased the courage, professionalism and dedication of the SDRF under perilous conditions. They extended their condolences to the bereaved family and expressed gratitude for the support received from local residents throughout the operation.
