NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday engaged with India's Commonwealth Games winners reflecting on the significant changes in Indian sports over the last decade. He asserted that welcoming national sportspersons to his residence in New Delhi has become a cherished tradition during his tenure.

Modi highlighted that the consistent achievements of Indian athletes serve as a far more powerful inspiration for young students than typical promotional efforts saying "Your medal inspires them more than anything we could say by going to schools."

During interactions, Prime Minister acknowledged the emotional journeys of athletes, such as a player who dedicated a victory to his coach and another who expressed tears of joy after overcoming years of injuries to see the National Flag raised. He stated that these victories go beyond personal milestones serving as an inspiration for future generations as "This victory of yours becomes a very big inspiration for the coming generations."

The Prime Minister also addressed the increasing respect and fear that Indian athletes command on the international stage particularly applauding Indian boxers and recognising the positive impact of initiatives like the Khelo India Scheme. He noted, “World players have now started fearing these boxers too,” indicating a growing international stature for Indian athletes.

Modi stressed the ongoing need for athletes to embody humility and the importance of fostering a sports culture in India, underscoring that national success hinges on cultural development as much as physical infrastructure.

He celebrated the patriotic spirit of an Indian Army athlete who triumphed against a Pakistani competitor on Kargil Vijay Diwas, dedicating his victory to Indian Army heroes, which he stated added immense pride to athletic accomplishments. Modi shared light moments with athletes, including a humorous encounter regarding names shared with an army coach.

Recognising the role of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in providing essential training facilities, he expressed gratitude to an athlete for their acknowledgment of this support signifying a collective journey from local competitions to international success. The Prime Minister also sought updates on upgraded sports infrastructure in regions like Varanasi and Bhopal and commended the ongoing support from SAI and the Khelo India framework established in 2018.
