
REGIONAL: The North Eastern Council (NEC) will convene its 73rd Plenary Session on June 4 (Thursday) in Shillong, Meghalaya, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This significant meeting will include participation from the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), the Minister of State for DoNER, Governors, Chief Ministers from the eight North Eastern States and other members of the Council alongside senior officials from Central and State Governments.
Prior to the Plenary Session, a pre-Plenary meeting was held Wednesday, where discussions held on flagship initiatives such as Bamboo, Agarwood and the Ashtalakshmi Darshan. Key attendees included the Secretary of MDoNER, Chief Secretaries from the eight North Eastern States, Secretary of NEC and senior officers from various governmental bodies.
Established under the North Eastern Council Act of 1971, the NEC functions as the primary regional planning entity for the North East playing a crucial role in promoting coordinated development and enhancing cooperative federalism in the area.
During the Plenary Session, attendees will review the progress made by the Chief Minister's High-Level Task Forces in critical sectors such as Tourism, Agriculture & Horticulture, Investment Promotion, Self-Reliance in Milk and Meat, Sports Promotion, Economic Corridor Development, Infrastructure & Connectivity as well as Handloom & Handicrafts. These discussions aim to foster coordinated actions among States and stakeholders to achieve shared developmental objectives.
In addition to sectoral presentations, the meeting will assess significant initiatives from the Ministry of DoNER, including updates on major schemes, results from the North East Investment Summit and Bankers’ Conclave, youth-focused projects and developments in tourism and logistics along with the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) projects in the region.
A key focus will also be on the North East Vision Plan 2047 that aims to create a comprehensive strategy for transitioning the North Eastern Region into a dynamic hub of economic growth, enhanced connectivity, innovation, sustainability and cultural richness by the centennial celebration of India’s independence. Council members are expected to share their insights on regional development priorities and explore opportunities for intensified inter-state cooperation.
