Nestlé India expands Project ‘Serve Safe Food'
REGIONAL: Nestlé India has collaborated with Food Safety, Meghalaya and National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) to expand Project Serve Safe Food in the state. As a part of the project, NASVI will train 300 street food vendors in the state across East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills taking the total number of trained street food vendors past 2,100.
Project ‘Serve Safe Food’ has already benefitted over 1,20,000 street food vendors across 27 states and 4 Union Territories by educating vendors on health, hygiene, safe food handling, waste disposal and entrepreneurship. The training programme equips vendors with the knowledge to improve their food handling practices.
RM Kurbah, Commissioner and Secretary, Home (Police) and Tourism Department said “Project Serve Safe Food has been instrumental in putting a spotlight on the street food culture of Meghalaya – making it a travellers’ paradise. After all, street food is often the truest reflection of a city’s culture, history, and people. Street food vendors play a vital role in enriching the tourism experience by offering visitors an authentic taste of Meghalaya’s traditions, heritage, and local cuisine. We are extremely happy that the Project has already trained more than 1800 street food vendors. I wish the collaboration between National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), Commissionerate of Food Safety, Govt of Meghalaya and Nestlé India all the best and hope we continue to work in this direction to further strengthen food safety, hygiene, and the vibrant street food ecosystem of the state.”
