Mekhliban Tea Garden, once thriving, now epicentre of tension

By IH News Desk Sep 09, 2026

AGARTALA: Mekhliban Tea Garden, once thriving, is now the epicentre of escalating tension as local hooligans attempt to occupy land and intimidate workers. Tea workers of the estate located near Agartala, organised a rally in Agartala, where they filed a complaint with the West Tripura District Magistrate seeking his intervention.

The distressed workers alleged being obstructed from their labour and highlighted the destruction of hundreds of tea plants by encroachers. They specifically identified a group of alleged hooligans including Sushil Debbarma, Priya Kumar Debbarma, Dulu Debbarma and Pranar Debbarma alongside 30-40 unidentified miscreants.

The workers detailed that they had faced threats against their lives should they attempt to continue their regular activities. They expressed their feelings of isolation and insecurity, underscoring a pervasive atmosphere of fear among the workforce in the memorandum submitted to the district magistrate.

They appealed for a thorough investigation into the matter and called for decisive legal measures against those responsible for the unlawful actions at the Mekhliban tea estate in Natun Bazar, West Tripura. Their demands included the protection of tea garden land, property and the investigation of the damaged tea trees and saplings.

They urged for protective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the tea garden workers, asserting the urgent need for measures to prevent future incidents.
