Kalyani Greenfield Airport project takes height

By IH News Desk Sep 21, 2026

NATIONAL: The West Bengal government is initiating the identification of land for the Kalyani Greenfield Airport project, intended to alleviate congestion at Kolkata Airport and enhance air connectivity in South Bengal. Approximately 2,000 acres across nine mouzas, including Kalyani and Birpara in the Nadia district, have been earmarked for this purpose.

The district administration has temporarily halted the registration of land sale and purchase documents in these regions.

The new airport project was first announced in the state budget earlier this year and is being modeled after the Navi Mumbai Greenfield Airport. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and construction timeline will be established following the completion of land acquisition and necessary administrative tasks.

The state government is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on September 28. This agreement is part of a wider initiative under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional connectivity scheme that will also see the development of four additional airports located at Chharra in Purulia, Balurghat in South Dinajpur, Hasimara in Alipurduar and Kalaikunda in West Midnapore.

The state government is set to transfer the necessary land to the AAI for these projects marking a significant step in expanding air transport infrastructure in the region.
