James Sangma files nomination as MDA candidate for RS election
REGIONAL: James Pangsang Kongkal Sangma, leader of the National People’s Party (NPP) and former legislator submitted his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections to Returning Officer Malthus S Sangma at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. His nomination was supported by Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K Sangma as well as members from the Cabinet, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), and various alliance partners including the UDP, BJP, HSPDP and several independent MLAs.
In a post-nomination statement, James expressed his gratitude towards the MDA government highlighting the unanimous support from alliance partners that led to his candidature. He articulated a commitment to advocate for pressing issues affecting Meghalaya in the Upper House if elected, asserting the need to ensure that the state's voice is amplified on significant matters.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma endorsed nomination of James, his younger brother, indicating that an elected NPP candidate would focus on important legislative issues affecting the state and facilitate communication between the central government and Meghalaya. He noted that James is expected to champion key issues such as the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule.
Conrad ushered hope that the elected Rajya Sabha MP will play a vital role in advancing several concerns within Parliament, including topics under the Sixth Schedule, amendments to the FCRA, illegal immigration challenges, and the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act. This collaborative approach aims to drive the representation of Meghalaya's interests at the national level effectively.
