In Meeting with Union Tourism and Culture Minister
NEW DELHI: Biplab Kumar Deb, the MP for West Tripura and former Chief Minister met with Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to discuss issues related to tourism infrastructure and preservation of cultural heritage in Tripura. Deb stressed the urgent need for the rapid execution of several key projects aimed at enhancing the tourism facilities at three significant 'Shakti Peethas' located in South Tripura - Yogmaya Kalibari in Belonia, Rajrajeshwari Kalibari in Muhuripur and Daityeshwari Kalibari in Sabroom.
A proposal with an estimated budget of ₹29.87 crore has already been submitted to the Union Ministry of Tourism for this initiative.
He also presented plans to elevate the archaeological site of Unakoti into a world-class destination, which includes upgrading access roads to a four-lane format, as well as enhancing facilities such as an open-air stage, landscaping, tourist accommodations, an eco-museum, shops, restrooms, safe water access, parking and adventure zones. The estimated cost for these developments is around ₹100 crore, and Deb stressed the importance of obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to proceed.
During the discussion, Deb reiterated the long-standing request for establishing an ASI Circle Office in Tripura. Currently, eight out of ten centrally protected monuments under the Aizawl Circle are in Tripura, yet the lack of a dedicated ASI office has inhibited effective conservation and administrative management.
He urged the quick completion of the Mata Tripurasundari Temple project under the PRASAD scheme, noting that ₹37.80 crore has been sanctioned, but an additional ₹17.61 crore is necessary due to unforeseen developmental needs. Prompt approval of these additional funds is crucial to meet project deadlines.
By investing in these modern infrastructures, Tripura can solidify its rich religious, historical and cultural heritage on both national and international tourism platforms. The successful implementation of these projects, with the backing of the Central Government, is expected to not only stimulate local employment and boost the economy but also significantly enhance the state's tourism prospects within the North-East region.
