Himanta Biswa Sarma visits flood-affected areas in Assam
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma Monday conducted a visit to flood-affected areas in Nazira, Mahmora and Sonari constituencies to evaluate the damage caused by recent floods in Upper Assam. This marked his second inspection of flood-hit districts Charaideo and Sivasagar post the floods that struck on July 19.
During the visit, he inspected various locations including Santak, Nepalikhuti and Sundarpukhuri in Nazira and engaged with local residents to understand their challenges.
To gauge the flood situation firsthand, he traversed the Nepalikhuti area using a tractor and conversed with villagers. He announced that government officials would start household assessments from August 9 for permanent damage, followed by compensation distribution.
He assured that health camps would be established, and aid would be provided to assist farmers in resuming agricultural work. He also pledged to strengthen the Sundarpukhuri embankment as per residents' requests.
The floods resulted in casualties, including the deaths of Nirupama Duwara and her niece, whose family he visited to offer condolences. Dr. Sarma emphasized the state's commitment to finding lasting solutions to flooding issues. He also visited waterlogged regions in Mahmora, notably Chomoni village, and offered financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of 14 flood victims, totaling Rs 56 lakh in aid.
He engaged with students at Jaya Primary School in Sonari, distributing textbooks and uniforms, while also providing Rs 5 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the families of five flood-related fatalities in the area. Through these actions, the Chief Minister aimed to address the immediate needs of those affected and facilitate their recovery.
