Genome India completes genome for 10,000 people: Dr Singh
NEW DELHI: Union Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh Saturday announced that the Genome India Mission has completed genome sequencing for over 10,000 people and is on track to create one of the largest genomic databases globally. During a special conclave ahead of celebrating Doctors’ Day, he highlighted India's unique genetic diversity and favourable scientific ecosystem, asserting that these factors coupled with emerging technologies are facilitating a new era of affordable and patient-centric healthcare.
Dr Singh stressed that the healthcare sector is undergoing a transformation, where treatments will become more personalised, taking into account individuals' genetic profiles, lifestyles and environmental contexts. He pointed out that India is making significant strides in developing homegrown solutions to address global health challenges including advancements in gene therapy and nuclear medicine.
Highlighting the impact of precision medicine and personalized healthcare, he discussed how these advancements enable accurate diagnoses and targeted therapies that improve patient outcomes. Indian researchers have already showcased successful applications of gene therapy for conditions such as hemophilia.
Minister noted that the fields of gene medicine and nuclear medicine are poised to revolutionize disease management in the country.
Dr Singh acknowledged the critical role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing genomic research and healthcare delivery by accelerating genome sequencing, biomedical research, disease diagnosis, telemedicine and medical education through improved data analysis and clinical decision-making. He stated that India is transitioning from merely manufacturing medicines to creating innovative drugs through indigenous research and initiatives such as the BioE3 Policy and the Bio-RIDE Mission.
