Flood situation: Tripura government opens 17 relief camps
AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha announced Sunday that the government will implement permanent measures to address the recurring flood situation in the state. Speaking after visiting various flood-affected areas and relief camps, including those at Vivekananda School, Bardowali and Ashram Chowmuhani, Dr Saha highlighted the government's proactive stance in managing the situation stating that officials are working tirelessly around the clock.
Dr Saha stated that areas such as Khowai and the West District experienced sudden flooding primarily due to heavy rainfall in the Barmura Hills. He referenced similar conditions from August 2024 indicating that the issue has been persistent.
The Chief Minister informed that while water levels in the River Haora had surpassed danger thresholds, they are currently receding, which is a positive development. He also mentioned that there has been no recent rainfall, which further assists in the recovery.
To address the immediate needs of those displaced, the government has opened 17 relief camps providing food and baby food to approximately 1,305 members from 413 families.
Dr Saha highlighted the deployment of disaster response teams and boats, alongside his direct engagement with officials over the phone while attending other programs. He acknowledged past constructions of embankments but reiterated the challenge posed by natural disasters and committed to seeking long-term solutions.
He assured that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are on standby and emphasized the dedicated efforts of local councillors, party workers and volunteers in responding to the needs of those affected particularly in the severely impacted West District.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Secretary Milind Ramteke and West District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar during his visits.
