AGARTALA: 15.31 metric tonnes of high-quality tea from the Durgabari Central Tea Processing Factory in West Tripura were sent to Kolkata while 8 metric tonnes were sent to Guwahati. Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department, Tripura, along with other dignitaries, launched the shipments during a ceremony at the Durgabari tea estate on September 11.
Samir Ranjan Ghosh, Chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited (TTDCL), said that the corporation manages five tea estates that produce about 9 lakh kilograms of tea each year, which is sold through auctions in Kolkata and Guwahati.
In the past, tea prices were often lower than production costs, creating financial difficulties for the industry in Tripura. Since the incumbent government took office in 2018, it has focused on improving the tea industry leading to an increase in selling prices from around ₹70–₹100 per kilogram to about ₹200 per kilogram, officials said.
They said the tea is now produced under careful management and quality control and the state’s tea industry has been revitalised through sustained efforts. The government is also providing benefits to improve the lives of tea workers including land rights and a daily wage increase to ₹204.
A new ambitous auction system for Tripura-produced tea is being planned to create more jobs and support producers, workers and traders.
