REGIONAL / NATIONAL: Approximately 60,000 kg of smuggled foreign-origin areca nuts were seized in recent operations conducted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in the northeast India.
These significant operations took place in Mizoram and Assam following specific intelligence reports regarding the illicit trade. Investigations have confirmed that the smuggled dried areca nuts entered India from Myanmar via the Myanmar-Mizoram border. One of the operations was supported by the 38Bn of Assam Rifles and as a result five suspects have been arrested.
The illegal import of areca nuts is having a detrimental impact on local growers resulting in severe economic damage and posing threats to economic stability in border communities. The DRI's efforts aim to address these economic challenges and reinforce security in the region.
