Celebrating India’s indigenous heritage and culture
JAIPUR / AGARTALA: Tripura brought home national honours as Chandamita Roy won the prestigious Best National Costume award at Miss Teen Diva 2026 in Jaipur, wearing an award-winning national costume conceptualised and designed by renowned fashion curator Yana Ngoba Chakpu, Founder & CEO of Northeast India Fashion Week – The Artisans Movement.
The winning creation celebrated the timeless artistry of Tripura’s indigenous communities while honouring the rich diversity of India’s tribal heritage. At the heart of the costume was an authentic handwoven textile of the Debbarman (Tripuri) community, meticulously woven on the traditional loin loom, preserving an age-old weaving tradition passed down through generations.
Inspired by the Nagkesar, the State Flower of Tripura, the dramatic floral wings symbolised the state’s natural beauty, resilience, and cultural identity. The ensemble was further enhanced with Indian coin jewellery, vibrant red beads, and silver tribal adornments inspired by the artistic traditions of indigenous communities across India, creating a contemporary interpretation of the nation’s living tribal legacy.
The national costume presentation received the support of the Hon’ble Tourism Minister of Tripura Sushanta Chowdhury, reflecting the Government of Tripura’s continued commitment to promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage and tourism through creative platforms.
Chandamita Roy said, “It was an honour to represent Tripura on a national stage through a costume that celebrates our indigenous heritage. Receiving the Best National Costume award is a proud moment, and I hope it inspires greater appreciation for our weavers, artisans and the rich cultural traditions they continue to preserve.”
Speaking on the achievement, Yana Ngoba Chakpu said: “This costume was created to tell a story—not just of Tripura, but of India’s indigenous soul. Every thread, every ornament, and every detail honours our artisans, our weavers and the cultural traditions that continue to inspire future generations. This recognition belongs to every artisan whose craft keeps our heritage alive.”
The recognition marks another milestone in showcasing the cultural richness of Tripura and Northeast India on the national stage, reaffirming fashion as a powerful medium for cultural preservation, storytelling, and tourism promotion.
