Advanced Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

AGARTALA: CK Birla Hospitals- BM Birla Heart Hospital, one of Eastern India’s leading cardiac care institutions, is redefining heart surgery outcomes through advanced Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) under the expertise of Dr Ratan Kumar Das, Director – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS). The innovative approach is offering new hope to elderly and high-risk cardiac patients by reducing surgical trauma, postoperative pain and recovery time compared to conventional open-heart surgery.

Unlike traditional open-heart procedures that require a large incision through the breastbone, MICS involves small incisions between the ribs using specialised instruments and advanced surgical techniques. The procedure significantly lowers the risk of infections, reduces blood loss and the need for transfusions, shortens hospital stay and enables faster recovery with minimal scarring.

Highlighting the growing importance of minimally invasive techniques in modern cardiac care, Dr Ratan Kumar Das said, “Elderly patients or those with multiple co-morbidities often require cardiac surgery but remain apprehensive due to fear of major procedures and prolonged recovery. Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery has transformed this experience by allowing us to perform complex surgeries with precision while ensuring less trauma and faster rehabilitation. The most rewarding aspect is seeing patients recover faster and return to normal life with confidence.”

In a recent clinical achievement, the BM Birla Heart Hospital team successfully performed a complex minimally invasive cardiac surgery on a 70-year-old woman with multiple co-morbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, previous hip replacement surgery, breast tumour surgery, and a permanent cardiac pacemaker. Critically ill with a severely compromised heart function (EF of 22%), the patient was initially fearful of undergoing another surgery.

After detailed evaluation and counselling by the cardiac team, she underwent successful MICS under the leadership of Dr. Das. Remarkably, the patient recovered well and was discharged within six days with minimal scarring and no postoperative lung complications despite her fragile condition.

The case reflects BM Birla Heart Hospital’s focus on combining advanced surgical innovation with patient-centric care to improve outcomes even in complex cardiac cases. The hospital continues to strengthen its expertise in minimally invasive and precision-driven cardiac procedures for patients across Eastern and Northeastern India.
