AGARTALA, October 20, 2019: Tripura police practically gave up after days of massive search to track down CPI(M) stalwart and former Minister Badal Choudhury who is wanted in Rs 600 crore PWD scam in 2008. He remained elusive and continues to give slip to search teams comprising officers and personnel of almost all wings of state police.
Even tough stance of state’s Chief Minister holding home portfolio reflected in suspension of west Tripura district Superintendent of Police Ajit Pratap Singh and eight police personnel from different ranks failed to yield nothing.
Police showed total failure to capture PWD scam tainted Badal Choudhury who went into hiding after his anticipatory bail was rejected on Wednesday night.
Choudhury and a number of former officials were indicted in the financial scam investigated by the Vigilance Department which registered a FIR in the west Agartala police station on October 13.
Police arrested former PWD Chief Engineer Sunil Bhowmik and he is held in police remand.
Highly placed sources said a section of police officers including one DIG covertly worked covertly to bail out Badal Choudhury. The DIG has been relieved of his responsibility, but not suspended from service so far through state government has credible evidence against him.
Meanwhile Choudhury’s anticipatory bail petition would come up for hearing in the High Court tomorrow.
