AGARTALA, November 13, 2019: CBI arrested another security official as it intensified probe into murder of two journalists during last 4 months of 2017. It took Swarupananda Biswas, Assistant Commandant in the 2nd battalion of paramilitary Tripura State Rifles (TSR), into custody Wednesday.
Sudip Datta Bhowmik, a reporter with Bengali daily Syandan, was shot dead inside office of Commandant Tapan Debbarman at R.K. Nagar, near Agartala when the former went to paramilitary campus for purpose. The other journalist Santanu Bhowmik who was working in a local television channel was lynched to death while covering a road blockade agitation at Mandwai, 25kms east of Agartala.
BJP in its manifesto ahead of assembly elections in 2018 had promised to invoke CBI probe in gruesome murders of the journalists. After assumption of office in March 2018, it handed over the probe to CBI, but its slow progress of investigation irked journalists at large.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb too felt it necessary to take up the issue with the Home Minister Amit Shah during a recent meeting at New Delhi.
As a result CBI team is currently camping in Agartala to accelerate investigation.
