Peace accord inked with Bodo militant groups

GUWAHATI, January 27, 2020: Union Government Monday facilitated signing of an accord with different Bodo militant groups in Assam who were fighting for a separate Bodo homeland sicne 1972.
The major underground group the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) has also been a signatory in the peace accord executed in New Delhi. All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) was also involved.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present during the signing of the tripartite agreement by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, top leadership of the four factions of the NDFB, ABSU, Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry Satyendra Garg and Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna.
Under the conditions of the agreement 1550 extremists would lay down arms in Bodo Territorial Council (BTC) area on January 30. The union government has promised to allocate Rs 1500 crore for rehabilitation of the surrendered extremists.
The government would also provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those killed in violent movement. It would set up a cultural institute in memory of Upendra Brahma who is attributed as father figure of Bodo people.
