NCSK directs various facilities for Safai Karamcharis

KOHIMA, February 17, 2020: The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, led by Chairman Manhar Valjibhai Zala after interacting with the Safai Karamcharis and authorities gave a press conference at Kohima Monday.
The Chairman while expressing his happiness that there was no death related to manual scavenging in Nagaland, said a District Vigilance Monitoring Committee as per the Manual Scavenging Act, 2013 should be set up.
Chairman Manhar Valjibhai Zala said that they will look into the request of Safai Karamcharis for increase in their wages as they find it difficult to meet their basic needs on a wage of Rs. 6000 at present. With 68 sanctioned post already filled and 126 temporary workers under KMC, the Commission has directed the authorities to provide minimum wages, leave benefit, safety equipment, housing facilities, medical facilities etc. to all the Safai Karamcharis.
The Commission said that all Safai Karamcharis should get a health card under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. The Commission also directed the authorities to provide facilities for separate changing rooms for ladies and gents, bathroom with water facilities etc.
The Commission also said that it is the fundamental right of Safai Karamcharis to get promotion according to seniority. It informed that there will be an awareness camp with medical health checkup for all Safai Karamcharis and their family members Tuesday at KMC office.
