AGARTALA, December 7, 2019: Decision of the BJP led NDA government to table the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in Parliament has triggered widespread protest in northeast India – home to over one hundred indigenous communities. Situation is much tensed in states like Assam and Manipur as they are witnessing massive public outrage on the streets over the issue.
In Tripura, tribal parties and forums are routinely holding protests in various forms.
The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) which is part of BJP led ruling coalition in the state called a 12-hours general strike against CAB on December 9 – the day union home minister Amit Shah would introduce the bill in parliament. The strike would be observed in areas under the tribal autonomous district council.
IPFT leader Mangal Debbarma stated the call was made in solidarity with protesting groups in northeast India.
